Congratulations to WHS freshman Else Haske, who took First Place in the 15th annual Teen Short Fiction Competition, presented by Write On The River and NCW Libraries!

Else's original story, "Origin of the Alchemist," was selected by librarians from across the region along with NCW Libraries' Teen Library Council, earning her a share of the $200 cash award.

"I have been writing short stories and comics since first grade," Else said. "I enjoy reading, biology, and like to use storytelling in my art and in my Dungeons and Dragons games. I am planning on becoming a professional writer once I graduate from high school."

"Origin of the Alchemist" was chosen by the judges for "its ambitious worldbuilding, vivid imagery, and strong sense of mythology. The author created an awesome and compelling atmosphere and handled the fantasy elements with confidence, making the story feel immersive and cinematic."
