After High School Planning
After High School Planning
Technical colleges can offer associate’s degrees and certificates for specific trades, setting students up for rigorous, hands-on careers. Some technical colleges even offer bachelor’s degrees, so be sure to check the offerings at the school you are considering.
Entrance requirements: A well-rounded high school background is important. Business, technology, family and consumer science, and arts courses are very appropriate. A student wishing further exposure to technical education might also consider attending the Wenatchee Technical Skills center.
Apprenticeships are competitive, paid positions that allow students on-the-job training in addition to their studies. Student apprentices graduate with the skills and experience needed to immediately enter their field.
WA Community & Technical Colleges that offer apprenticeships
Community Colleges offer associate’s degrees, certificates, and training for certain trades. Some even have limited bachelor’s degree offerings.
Entrance requirements: Community colleges require high school graduation or the equivalent. They do not require a specific GPA or test scores. Solid academic preparation is required to avoid significant remedial coursework. Many students complete two years at a community college before transferring to a four year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
Universities offer bachelor’s and post-graduate degrees and often charge a higher tuition cost. However, scholarship offerings are often more robust at public and private universities to help offset the cost. The following courses are minimum requirements for admission to Washington State universities:
- 4 years of English (including composition and literature)
- 3 years of Math (through Algebra 2 or a math based course in the senior year)
- 2 years of Science
- 3 years of Social Studies
- 2 years of a single World Language
- 1 year of Fine Arts
